The John Lawson Memorial Community Thanksgiving Dinner began when Fran Wellman, a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church, decided to have a Thanksgiving Dinner for the community with free bus rides at Cross Roads UMC for those who could not afford it. Fran also ran the “In as Much” soup kitchen. While working there, Fran met a homeless man named John Lawson and invited him to church. John quickly became a part of the Cross Roads family and turned his life around after claiming Jesus Christ as his Savior. He began volunteering in the soup kitchen and at the church and always enjoyed helping with the Thanksgiving Dinner and knew many of the people who attended. When John succumbed to cancer, the Community Thanksgiving Dinner was named in his honor. John Lawson, we love you and miss you!
